Please describe your background (i.e. current job, industry, etc.) and what motivated you to join StudentMentor.org?
My name is Cecily Wang and I am a trauma/acute care/general surgeon. I work as a surgeon in the U.S. 6 months a year, and do medical relief work and anti-human trafficking work overseas the other 6 months with an organization called New Reality International. I’m the physician whose story is told on the home page of the VistaStaffing site.
I joined StudentMentor.org because it is an easy way for me to connect with motivated young people who just need a “sounding board” or another perspective or a bit of advice – I can do this from almost anywhere with a good internet connection.
What have you been helping the mentee on and how has this experience been for you?
Most of my mentees are seeking advice about entering fields in health care, such as getting into medical school. Working with them has been a lot of fun and brings (even more) variety into my life. I don’t usually have all the answers right away, but I can often look them up or ask a friend or colleague – so I’m learning from the experience too. I truly appreciate the opportunity StudentMentor.org has given me to meet and work with some exceptional people.
