Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook, has been spending his time working on a new project. In this recent quote, he gives a clue to what he’s been up to these days,“The more thoughtful people are about global issues, the stronger we’ll be as a community.” I couldn’t agree more, and found his interview with Charles Schwab’s, On Investing magazine to be an interesting read.

At 27 years old, Chris Hughes is heading a newly formed nonprofit named Jumo, using the internet to connect people with the causes that need a great deal of assistance. Jumo–which means “together in concert”–in the West African language of Yoruba, has a mission to encourage people to give of not only their money, but volunteer time and skills, to help find an answer to the world’s most pressing issues. Hughes describes Jumo as, “…a network to foster relationships between individuals and organizations working for global change. So we’re trying to build a network that creates a dynamic social presence.”

The idea is to assist those individuals who want to help, (but haven’t a clue where to start), find an organization easily on Jumo. Hundreds of thousands have visited the website since it’s debut this past December. Hughes states, “I think the level of interest in what we’re doing is a testament to the hunger that’s out there for a single simple tool that helps people connect to the organizations and causes that are important to them.” His observation is backed up by Blackbaud Index of Online Givings findings, which shows in the third quarter of 2010, during rough economic times, online charitable giving increased 22%, compared with the same period a year earlier.

So, what does a highly successful 27 year old want to do with the rest of his life? It’s admirable. Hughes commented, “I want to continue to spur people to thoughtful action. And as long as there are as many challenges out there as there are now, this is the space I’ll be working in.” We need more philanthropists like Chris Hughes in the world. Personally, I can’t wait to see what he comes up with next!
