I'm assuming you have either a BS or AS in accounting. Correct?

If you have education in the field, try and get an internship with a public accounting firm or business to get some first hand experience even if it is unpaid.

Also try recruiting firms, both temporary and permanent as even a temporary position gets you experience and a foot in the door.

Most importantly I would stress education. Want to do bookkeeping? Then get a quickbooks or peachtree certification. Want to do taxes? Get your tax preparers cert. want your CPA? Get a degree (which one depends on your state).

If you're already degreed, network. Network like crazy. I give my friends jobs. Either I hire them, or I let them know when I find spots and put in a good word for them. Get involved at your state society (I live in California, mine is CalCPA), you will get opportunities through the people that you meet.

Hope this helps, let me know if you have any follow up questions.
