If you are still in school, your school may have a career services department you can work with. If that is not an option, identify some companies you'd like to gain experience with and reach out to them. You can start by asking if you can shadow an employee for the day and if it seems like a good match, ask for other opportunities.

If you are looking for work study, you'd have to get the school involved on some level I would think.

There are many options depending on at what level you are asking about. If you are asking about accounting and tax field, I recommend contacting your local firms to seeing if they have internships. These are most prevalent in the busy season timeframe when they are looking for seasonal work (Jan - April). Firms also use this as a recruiting tool. If they like you during your internship, they will most likely make an offer towards the end of it.

If you live in a smaller city and options are few, you may have to move to larger cities to find those internships. Some firms even pay their interns pretty good money for their time there too.
