In order to be a commercial pilot a 4 year degree is highly desired, however the exact major does not have to be quite as specific. Many pilots who complete a 4 year college degree major in business with an aviation management emphasis. This gives you the opportunity to "fall back" on another job if flying doesn't quite work out for you at some point in the future.

For example I attended a university that offered a major of "Aviation Management / Flight Operations" and it was offered through the Business College. I was given a business background, and emphasis on aviation, and actual flight courses.

The important thing is that you have a 4 year degree, do well in school, and achieve the required pilot certifications. The flying that you do could either be done in conjunction with your 4 year degree, or you could do it from a flight school not connected with your university.
