It certainly could be. You have to determine if you'd like to be a mechanic or perhaps pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.
I have a mechanical engineering degree and have worked for General Motors Engine Plant and Dunlop Tire building facility for 6 years. It's a fast pace environment working in a plant because it's generally higher volume and a larger scale operation. I've seen lay-offs and cut backs to union and salary employees. The automotive industry is highly competitive.
