Practice and dedication to the task at hand. Most top level executives (CEO, CFO, COO, etc.) are hand-picked by a board of directors (which may consist of investors or high ranking corporate leaders or both). You must prove yourself through education, experience and the desire to grow.

If you are in college, majoring in Engineering or Business Administration would be a good start. Don't stop there, an MBA would most likely be preferable for the top dog levels. Communication and interpersonal skills are a must.
