Have you checked out the Project Management Institute at www.pmi.org? They have a project management certification program that could get you started and help you stand out from other job applicants. I wasn't a Project Manager myself, but I hired, worked with and managed many project managers in my career. the PMP (Project Management Professional) certification was always a plus for me when I saw it on someone's resume. It will cost money, though.
