I've been a part of three advertising/technology based startup companies and worked a lot in business development/management.
If your field is business management as indicated above I think you'll find it rather difficult finding something truly independent.
Business and management in nature require a lot of cross-functional work. Even as a BM consultant you will be required to lead or work with a team (and usually have a minimum of 10 years experience).
In my experience the most independent employees have been IT (ex. working on servers - they're pretty much just left to do their thing) and accounting (ex. half looking over numbers with me and half independently) consultants. However, I'm not sure how much that holds up generally.
