I owned a retail business in New York state and my husband owned a construction company, building high-end homes, offices, apartments, and small restaurants. One of the best ways you can help yourself is to find the nearest SBA office (Small Business Association). Ours was run out of the nearby university. They can help you with banking, setting up your books, planning marketing strategies, etc.
Another idea is to join organizations associated with whatever type of business you plan on starting. Networking and learning from others is so helpful when you are first beginning. We went to a number of National Association of Home Builders conferences and found them invaluable.
Best of luck - we need entrepreneurs like you who are willing to take a chance!
