Internships in Washington D.C.

I'm studying in Washington D.C. for the upcoming fall semester. I was wondering if anyone knew of some great places to intern? I'm an international business major.

Washington, DC is arguably the internship capital of the US (perhaps even the world); particularly during the summer month's DC is flooded with interns from all corners of the globe, serving organizations ranging from Congress to the National Cancer Institute to Capital One. Each company/ agency offer's a different intern experience, some can be as mundane as fetching coffee for senior executives, while others can be as exciting as influencing international policy.

There is no one specific company or companies that are better to intern than others, any given internship can be a total hit for one student while simultaneously a total miss for another. Your experience is largely dependent on what you are looking to get out of it.

That being said, I highly recommend investigating the Federal Government's new Pathway's Program internships at www.usajobs.gov/StudentsAndGrads. Every Federal agency runs their internship program slightly differently, however, the one constant is the opportunity to be involved with decision makers at the highest levels of civil service.

If you are interested in interning with private industry, check out the K St. Law Firms/ Lobbyists, or e-Learning companies. Think outside the box, look at international development firms, consulting firms, nonprofits, etc. Suffice to say there is no lack of internship opportunities. I strongly recommend working with the career center at the university you will be studying at to help identify opportunities.

Best of luck and enjoy the Nation's Capital!
