There's two types of consultant, assigned to larger companies in the IT world. The first is an engineer who assists in the design and implementation of systems. Front end, back end, HR, communication and many other platforms. This role comes with experience and working your way up the ladder. Specific degrees are also helpful, but the experience is what pays off.

The second kind is the "doing experience". Being on the team to fix, modify, re-direct-improve, etc. This is where the firm hired as the consulting firm, is on site almost everyday. This type of experience is priceless as you are in a "first hand" laboratory type environment. As you are working day to day with the client you are gaining a momentous amount of knowledge and experience.

Each situation is different and no matter how many higher education degrees you get, the real time, first hand experience cannot be gained any other way.

Salary always depends on where you are and what level your expertise is. You will interact with clients all of the time, offering this advice, suggestions, and complete tasks they ask of you.
