Great question. It's definitely harder, but one place to start is if your town has a community access TV station. They often have pretty good equipment and opportunities to get involved working on productions with other members at the station, which will help you learn. Sometimes they have miniature classes that cost between $30 and $100 which can be very helpful.

It's a lot of work but it can definitely be done. In fact, learning through practical experience can be a better way to learn than by sitting in a classroom.
