I have experience in many different fields: degrees in Engineering, Economics, Anthropology, and my wide area of interests have made it difficult to settle into a career. After a 6 month experience in a start-up coffee shop, I am investigating business and entrepreneurship: starting and leading companies, preferably those with a mind to social welfare as well. I don't know what the next step is, nor do I have the financial resources to just go out and start a company from scratch. Help?

Sure you do! You just didn't know it yet!

You may wish to investigate the potentials of online-based businesses. Perhaps you may be interested in starting a Blog, which, if done correctly, can be a platform to reach a large audience where you would sell products. These products would be books/eBooks, courses, affiliates, or even merchandise. If interested, check out http://fizzle.co/sparkline.
They have a $1 first month entry for their How-To-Start-A-Blog program which is very good, http://fizzle.co
I am in no way affiliated with them, just a thought as I'm not sure if you have a specific interest with your business. Are you looking to start a certain type of brick-and-mortar establishment that would donate funds to a certain cause?
