Start in retail. It will give you a feel of how the industry works. Really research the company you are about to apply for so that you know the benefits of working for and with them. Also, once you start working don't let the mean customers or possibility of making mistakes make you doubt what you love to do. Whether you want to be a designer, visual merchandiser, store manager, or a buyer, starting as an associate will give you a clear understanding of the business. Then you can take the steps of working your way up the ladder. Read tons of books on designers, textiles, and marketing. Understanding every side will give you good glimpse of what you want to go to school for.
Best of luck!
