For a little reference here's some statistics:

As of 2009, the average hourly wage for museum curators was $25.16, and the average annual salary was $52,330, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Curators in the 10th percentile earned up to $27,000 each year, while the middle 50 percent, between the 25th and 75th percentiles, earned from $35,300 to $65,080 per year. The median annual salary was $47,930, but the top earners, those in the 90th percentile, made $83,900 a year or more.

New York Averages about 57 thousand. It's a good state to consider. I think you could live quite comfortable.
