Attend a few state, county, and local public planning commission meetings. If you like what you hear and see then you will have a better idea about direction to take. Mapping is a must. Presentation is everything. You will have to know Zoning and Building restrictions for the city. Pick a town and find their planning commission web page and see what they have going on.
Do you want to do city planning, or land management? Do you want to design new sub-divisions, or manage vast areas of forest for recreational purposes? Maybe a specialized planner, airports? Parks and Recreation? Zoo's? amusement parks? if you want, we can yak about this more if you like what I have to say...good luck in your goals.
