If you like writing and are good at it, then you have good options.

Have you checked idealist.org? It is a great place to look for volunteer opportunities and internships. You could work at non-profits, publishing houses (you can check their websites for opportunities), check major organizations for writers (e.g. MLA), online and brick and mortar magazines and newspapers, any PR company. Check online which of these companies / organizations are in your area and if they offer internship opportunities. Of course, you can use idealist.org, but that's only for non-profits. If the companies do not have any announcements online, email them to ask just in case they have not posted them online.

Work hard on your resume and the cover letter to show your great writing. I'd recommend that you visit the Career Services at your school. They should be able to help you with these documents and will help you practice for the interview. They probably have several people on staff who work with students, so if your first experience is not great, go again, and meet with someone else.

Also if your school has a Writing Center, go to them with your documents, to get feedback. Again, try different tutors.

It will be best if you go to these places with several job / internship/ volunteer announcements, so they can help you write the cover letter specifically for each job. This is key!

Best of luck!
