You can apply to work as a police officer the same as you would apply for any other job. Search online in your local area for various police hires. For instance, if you live in New York, conduct a search for New York Police Department careers. However, in NY, be prepared for an extensive background check, criminal background check, psychiatric exam and other training that can take up to a year to complete. In states such as Georgia, the background check is not nearly as extensive with training lasting less than 12 weeks in many jurisdictions and no education required in many jurisdictions. Some states merely require that you be 21 years old and take an exam....remember, nothing beats a failure but a try. However, if interested in education, pre-police, I would consider a 2-4 year Criminal Justice program. FYI, I am a former prosecutor (charging criminals for people arrested by police) and my ex-husband is a NY Police Department Captain. I hope this helps.
