I can understand your concern. It is frustrating trying to figure out if this is right career path. One thing I encourage students to do in this situation is to shadow a nurse and see what they do. I would recommend shadowing different types of nurses such as pediatric nurse (works with kids) so that you can get an overview of the different types of nursing there are. Nurses are everywhere - in home health, hospitals, clinics, community health centers, Indian reservations, military, etc. Nurses are in high demand for the population that you want to work with as well. Rural nursing might expose you to patients who are less fortunate. Also, places that work with the homeless population - call your local soup kitchen and see where the homeless people go to get medical care. Then call that place and ask if you could shadow their nurse.
