Hi there.

The best thing you can do, if you have some time, is volunteer with a nonprofit as a committee member to help with their events. There are hospitality degree programs, which would be your best bet if you want to be an event planner--you'll need to understand how to best work with the vendors you use for an event which can include hotels, convention centers, or other smaller venues like theatres or museums.

Great event planners need a lot of different types of skills:
Excellent people/communication skills
Managing project timelines
Preparing and managing budgets
Understanding scheduling
Contract negotiation skills (working with a variety of venues like hotels and other event spaces)
Handling VIP's
