Human Resources entails pre-hiring screening, interviewing, handling employee concerns/complaints, updating current employee files, training staff, health benefits, customer service, ensuring employment/employer laws are followed, among other duties.
Human Resources does not require a "hard personality" but definitely someone that is good at citing company policy and ensuring policies are followed, and the ability to handle difficult personalities up to and including employee write ups and termination.

Human Resources (HR) has such a huge scope and it just depends on what you are interested in that will help you land the right area within HR that will be fulfilling to you. Some of the specific areas within HR are as follows: Compensation & Benefits, Employee Relations, Recruiting and Training & Development. I have worked in a few areas within HR, such as Benefits and Recruiting. Currently, I work in Recruiting and I love it. Recruiting is my favorite facet of HR, because it truly fits my personality. I love to help others obtain job opportunities. So, to answer your last question about hard personality. It just depends on which area you work in. You do need to be a very firm and confidential person, but at the same time you should be personable. I hope this has helped you in some way.
Human Resources is a great career choice!!! It entails various areas of work, such as Compensation/Benefits Administration, Talent Acquisition/Recruiting, Employee Relations and Training, just to name a few. I currently work in the area of Talent Acquisition/Recruiting for a large Oil & Gas company and I love it. Also, it does not require a hard personality. But, it does require a personality that is mature, seasoned, trustworthy, confidential, organized and that enjoys helping other people.
