It depends on what is your previous academic background. For example, if you were a computer science major, it is not too difficult. If you you were liberal arts, it can be much harder. In general, if you try very hard, willing to spend a good amount of time studying consistently, pretty much books and materials for every course can be purchased or obtained online or from book store. It will be difficult without someone to "teach" you but these days there are online videos and training courses available. You can absolutely self-learned the fundamental knowledge required to be a data scientist.

You need to have @ background in statistics, a background in hypothesis testing, data gathering, and substantive knowledge of scientific areas that impac5 your area of professional study. Take a look at th3 biographies of major scientists and you will likely find that every one of the contemporary major scientists has a strong background in under varsity education.
