Hi,

When you say system analyst, do you mean System administrator - Unix/ Windows or more of infrastructure analyst. I presume you're looking for business analyst position. If you're in infrastructure its not that hard to switch to business analyst. Based on this assumption I am giving my feedback - I am sure you're already involved in projects deployment and implementation. I would suggest to go more towards application development and from there you can switch to business analyst. Sometimes business analyst require basic SQL knowledge and product knowledge. You should be also require analytical, creative and must have problem solving skills. From soft skills perspective, you should be good in presentation and communication skills. You should also act as liaison with technical team and business teams, external and internal clients.

If you're already comfortable with infrastructure If I were you I would directly get in touch with any project manager and see if you can be a junior business analyst for a project . So its more to do with product requirements gathering (if its product based company or project) or project requirements gathering. So once you are used to this process in a project/product design and other skills which I mentioned above, from my experience I think 1 year would be sufficient enough for a transformation to business analyst. You might also require some knowledge on testing methodologies which can be learn on the job. Hope this helps.
