No, that is NOT neccessarily true.....most police departments; to become a detective, it would be a lateral move (internally) you either have to start as a beat cop (foot patrol) of if you have schooling/degree it would be taken under consideration as far as determining (salary start) but not to automatically come in and start as a detective the only state that it is considered is New York, so if you're located there your chances are great LOL!!! GOOD LUCK

No police department in the country will start you as a detective, regardless of your education. All officers have to do their time on patrol then apply from within. Of course a law degree is always a plus. Your starting salary would also be higher. The exceptions would be federal and certain state agencies that hire criminal investigators. Although some of the best investigators I've worked with started out as uniformed patrol officers.

I agree with Nia, you would first be hired on as an officer, probably a patrol officer and would need to put hard work and dedication into it and move up the ranks to become a detective. Would could be vary helpful is to do a informal interview with your local police department and ask them about the hiring process, and the ranks that you need to meet to become a detective. Good Luck!
