The area you area you are talking about is huge.
Automation in manufacturing is everywhere. From Robotics to surgery. So, first I suggest you decide the area of manufacturing; for example cars, electronics, medical, and so on.
Then what do you like; for example computers, work in machine shop, electronics, and so forth.
Then you can narrow it to the final field of study for example;
I like electronics ( for example) then I want to know about automated circuit board assemblies, how consumer electronics is automated and how I can program the computers.
So look to yourself first when it comes to automation and discover what you like first then choose what piece of automation you would like to shoot for. I hope this is helpful.
