I think that the safest bet to invigorate a fresh start is the truth! The gap was for a reason...be honest about the gap as to why it happened!
I had a gap one time and it was for medical reasons, so I put that down for my reason and that the medical issue was now resolved. Another time I was raising a family and my wife was having another child and I was needed around the house to care for her and the new baby so another gap took place...I was honest about that too.
I hope this can work for you too, good luck.

It depends on your field of study. I am speaking from an engineering field of view. Possibly, the act of volunteering at a technical school or employment jump start program would give you a talking point on your resume that would help mask the employment gap.
