Yes, either that or do as I did. When I was 17 I started a 4 year engineering apprenticeship. During the apprenticeship, the company paid me to go to college and get a degree. Unfortunately, apprenticeships are few and far between these days; it is a great way to learn, get experience and get paid for it all at the same time!

Alternatively, go to college and constantly search for for internships at manufacturing companies. There re a few out there, plus the college should be able to find one in the area.
