As Ash said there are numerous ways to get into online marketing and also numerous areas of online or digital marketing you could be involved in initially (and throughout your career) including;

- Search Engine Marketing (SEM)
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Display Marketing/Media Planning
- Email Marketing
- E-commerce / Online Sales
- Mobile Marketing
- Video Marketing
- Affiliate Marketing
- Social Media Marketing
and many others too

A simple way of course is to apply to digital/interactive agencies for full time and/or intern positions when you are ready but also there are things you can do now with learning with free online courses, tutorials and of course with bouncing ideas of a mentor :)

There are a number of different ways to get into online marketing. The field is rapidly expanding and it's a great place for a new college grad to start out!

First, you can check out sites like Udacity.com that have free classes on search engine marketing (SEM), search engine optimization (SEO), customer relationship management (CRM), social media, and others. This will give you a primer of the different types of online marketing strategies.

Once you're more familiar with the type of strategy, see what interests you. Do you like copy writing and thus would make a good SEM marketer using Google Adwords on a daily basis? Or, are you good at math and statistics and want to be on the analytical side of online marketing.

I had an online marketing company right out of college where I used SEM and landing page optimizations to sell products. I've since done virtually all aspects of online marketing but have moved into product management for an online company. I still work on marketing activities, but I focus on the product roadmap and set the strategy for the product. I find that it's more creative for me personally as I like to build things.

It helps to connect with mentors on this site in the industry and learn about what they do on a daily basis. Best of luck!
