Hi! I work in social media. My advice is to get (or create) your own internship. Find a business and offer to help them with their social media. Any hands-on experience is great. Also, you need to show clearly through your personal use that you know what you are doing. Be active and engaged across all social channels. It seems a bit tedious, but trust me, we check everyone's channels. What would make us think you'll do a great job managing social for someone else if you don't even do it for yourself.

I moved to New York City, got an internship and consulting job, then moved back to KC and found my current job that I love! Be proactive! Let me know if you have any other questions.
