Marketing is a very diverse field! In marketing you could either be a general marketer who participates in many of these activities within a company, or specialize in just one or two of them. The structure of that can vary from company to company. Here are some of the many different areas of marketing:
Advertising
Pricing
Promotions
Product development
Creative/graphic design
Email (for business marketing)
Social Media (for business marketing)
Search engine optimization
Digital marketing (web advertising or web analytics)
Campaign management
Direct mail
Sales
Brand management
Public relations
Event planning
Market/consumer research
.....more!

There are also marketing jobs in a variety of different fields/industries, including:
Non-profit
Retail
Healthcare
Consumer goods
Education
.....basically anything!

As you can see, there is a lot of diversity in the type of career you can have in marketing. Typically, people who go into marketing have skills such as a friendly and outgoing personality, creativity, organization, data analysis, and negotiation. It varies a little--creativity is more important for a graphic designer, whereas data analysis is more important for web analytics or market research.
