You have the luxury of experiences talking to all your family members, pick their brain on what their experiences were like, positive and negative! It is a great and rewarding experience, in my opinion. Just be sure you know why you are potentially joining and be informed in your decision making process, gained by experience talking to members in the branch you are considering. Obviously, the more recent their experience and close to the job path you want to take, the better, for your own understanding.
Joining the military is a very exciting and rewarding experience. You will get many opportunities to travel, meet other people from all different parts of the world and above all of that, you will learn how to put others including your country before yourself.
It is a huge decision, and comes with a price. Your time and you being willing to sacrifice things for others.
You will have the opportunity to peruse school, save some money, serve your country, and grow to become a very self sufficient individual. As always, I recommend people consider all of their options prior to seeking a career in the military. Look at colleges, programs, and of course if the military is your thing, recruiters. Try not to be fixated on only one thing when it comes to your career choices. Sometimes all it takes is visiting a college, shadowing a company, or just talking to other people about your common interests. Life continues to amaze me everyday, and of the many interesting aspects there are, talking to others is crucial for developing exactly who you want to be. If we just sat in a room all day and thought about what "I" wanted you would never see the bigger picture. Sometimes you need to get out there and talk to others.
None the less, I think a career in the military is not a poor choice! Just make sure it is for you.
