I would recommend volunteering at a daycare center or even at a after school program. Working with children can be quite rewarding at the same time challenging. You must have very good patience and be a very good listener when dealing with children. I had my own in-home daycare and it was very rewarding as well I am a children's church teacher. You might want to even try volunteering at the Boys & Girls Club. Having this experience will be very helpful in determining your career choice.
There are a variety of career choices that would allow you to work with children, if you are interested in non-profit specifically, some choices are social worker, nurse, physical or occupational therapists and even a life activities therapist. Many of these are hospital based positions but they can also be community based and allow for opportunities in the school setting, clinics and developmental disabled centers. I would suggest volunteering with Special Olympics or another local organization to meet individuals in one of these careers and spend time talking with them and even setting up a shadow day.
