If you live in a small town, try writing a local newsletter, with points of interst for the local folks. Town upcoming events, restaurant reviews, construction projects that might impact traffic flow, local store and their upcoming sales. Do this for a few months and then seek out some paid advertising.
Try submitting articles to the local newspapers. Find a subject that you are passionate about. Sports, politics, environmental issues, etc. This will give you practice and exposure. Stick with a subject matter that excites you. Keep submitting articles until you get published.

Alot of positions these days do not care about a degree but care more about your portfolio and what you bring to the table as far as skills are concerned. Writers are needed in every publishing company in the world! Currently I work for a publishing company in nyc that specializes in health care and real estate. To my left and right are nothing but writers. They get paid a hefty salary to constantly write intriguing content for the doctors and real estate agents that read our publications. Without content my company would be nothing and without writers there is no intriguing content. Hope this helped a little.
