Hi there-

I'm a young professional who works for Turner Sports marketing for the NBA, MLB, NCAA, PGA and NASCAR properties. Like you, I had early aspirations for working in sports.

Lucky for us, the sports industry is vast with many opportunities in many different areas. It's all about networking and connections in this industry so internships are very important to getting experience but mostly getting your foot in the door.

Looking at the job boards at teams, leagues, networks, and agencies might be a useful tool to give you some direction of what's out there. ( for example: http://www.nfl.com/careers/internships)

Depending on your interests here are several areas you can get into:

League- i.e. NBA, MLB, NFL
Corporate Partnerships
Public Relations

- Operations
- Sponsorship Sales and Marketing
- Partnerships

Agencies- i.e. Mediacom, Carat, Optimum Sports, Wasserman
-Media Buying and Planning on Sports Accounts like Gatorade, Nike, Adidas
-Athlete or Venue Representation

Media- TV Cable and Broadcast Networks that air Sports (i.e. Turner, ESPN, FOX, CBS, and their digital platforms like cbssports.com for example)
- Ad Sales/ Marketing
- Digital Sales/ Marketing
- Production
- Public Relations
- Emerging Tech

These are just a handful. Recently, several start-up companies around sports have emerged that might be interesting to look at, as well. There are also schools with great sports marketing programs (such as Syracuse) that will will help guide you through the process and connect you with internships. The important thing is to work hard throughout college and take every opportunity available to you.
