If there is major league soccer or either a minor league or major league baseball team near where you live, they typically hire interns---especially the minor league baseball team.
It's probably not too soon to contact them to find out when to apply.
My guess would be in the January/February timeframe, but let's not guess and risk missing out on the opportunity.
