If you're finding it hard to stay focused for long periods of time, you should try focusing for more, shorter periods of time. You're right that it's impossible to study and attend class nonstop for 8 hours a day and maintain your focus at the same time. So, take breaks often, but not so often that you don't get a chance to actually get into what you're studying. If you're doing homework, take a break every half hour or so for a couple minutes. Get up, get a drink of water. If you're studying a lot, then take a longer break every couple hours.
You can treat it like a job in that you should plan your time out -- some time each day to both study and to relax. It can help to review what you've learned in class right after the class if you can, and then again before the next session of that class.
You'll have to experiment with different things and find out what works for you to help you keep your focus, but I wouldn't worry that there is something wrong with you for not being able to focus for 8 hours straight -- everyone needs breaks.
Well, I wouldn't recommend having two full time things to do every day. You might consider taking classes part time and taking some in the summer.
Every credit hour you are taking roughly translates to about 3hrs of actual "work" per week.
So, considering that a full load of classes tends to be 15 credit hrs, you can expect to put in about 45hrs of "work" (depending on how difficult your classes are).
Keeping this in mind, you may have to cut down on classes if you are already working a full time job. If you don't have a full time job, treating school as a 9-5 job makes perfect sense (plus, you'll have evenings and weekends off!).
I think it is a great idea to treat a university as a 9-5 job. I did this with high school (get in, get the work done, and get out), and it seemed to work for me. Also, break study time down, work for 45-50 minutes, take a 10-15 minute break. This helps me!
Depends on your personal style/preferences. Also - are you living on campus? commuting?
It will also depend on your schedule (there were some semester where I didn't have classes on one or more days per week!)
You likely won't be in class from 9-5, so you'll have lots of 'down' time. You can choose to use that time for studying & homework (like you're at your office doing work), but you may also need to find a balance between 'class' stuff and 'other' stuff - part time job, goofing off, hanging out with friends, exercising, etc.
Consider any other obligations you have in life, as well, and see how they all fit together.
If you can't study for long periods of time, that's OK - break them up! Just an example: class for 2 hours, get lunch, study for an hour, watch a movie, do homework for an hour, get dinner, go to the gym/pool/whatever for an hour...you'll need to figure out what works for you, though! :)
