No you dont. There are many different majors in Animal Medicine. For example, you can become a Vet and just do Vet Tech. You work with machines, doing xrays, ct scans, and ultra sounds on animals. AND you can even rehab animals after surgery. You still get that hands on experience with animals without surgery.

Majority of Veterinarians do surgery and almost all have to at the very minimum participate while in school. There are some specialities where surgery is not necessary (nutrition, behavior, radiologist, etc), but in order to get through to that point you will participate in surgery.
