The first thing to consider is whether or not you like PEOPLE too. Because for the most part, animals are owned by people. Its the owners that make the care decisions for animals from what to feed them all the way to whether or not they can afford veterinary treatment. Its important to be the advocate for the animal, so if you are not a good communicator with their people, the animal is ultimately the one that loses out.
