It seems as though you're asking two different questions. As to the choice of a major, any field that requires writing is a good one, and that would include just about any non-scientific area. I personally majored in English and apparently learned enough about expressing myself clearly so that I wound up in careers of marketing and technical communication. My employers ranged from Jet Propulsion Laboratory to Mattel Toys, Hewlett-Packard, and Apple Computer.

I guess that deciding what you want to study should be any subject that you enjoy writing about, so that you can gain the experience and the confidence to try for any area of communication later. Good, clear, persuasive writing seems to be in shorter and shorter supply all the time, so the opportunities to offer it as a skill are always expanding.
