Please describe your background (i.e. current job, industry, etc.) and what motivated you to join StudentMentor.org?
My name is Michele Simpson and my career has consisted in dealing with the public for the last 25 years in the Retail field. I have held all position levels up to a District Manager of Store Operations. My experience includes Business Acumen, Human Resources, Strategic Planning, Driving Measurable results, Budget Management, new store openings and much more. I have worked with small box to large box retailers. I have a degree in Interior Design and Cosmetology. My most recent adventure is opening my own fashion boutique which includes kids and pets, in Atlanta GA.
I was motivated to join StudentMentor.org when I was transitioning from the corporate work environment to my personal venture. In the process, I explored my career experience and also thought a lot about the new generation and how to get them on track in their careers quickly and in a professional manner.
What have you been helping the mentee on and how has this experience been for you?
I have worked with my mentees on resolution of their professional field as it relates to what they enjoy, what they have experienced, and their education. I encourage them to utilize me in every aspect that they can and with them giving me their background and goals it allows us to plan the needed steps. We also set steps in their goals and schedule a follow up on the next touchpoint. It is great to see them transition in their goals no matter how small.
This has been a great experience for me and allows me to mentor someone that I do not know and it shows that you can help someone just with modern technology. I have always mentored my employees and family members and this experience is the same, yet we just use email and the telephone!
Would you recommend getting involved with StudentMentor.org to others?
I would highly recommend mentoring students with StudenMentor.org. The experience and feeling that you get from working with the students is such a great feeling. You feel a great deal of satisfaction placing someone on the right track.
