Mike’s Story

Mike Martone

I have been working in accounting and finance for over three years now in industries such as aviation, pharmaceutical, and I am currently a Technical Accountant at a major reinsurance firm. In college I had taken a major role in re-establishing The Accounting Society and served as Vice President for two consecutive terms before graduating with my bachelors of science in accounting. I also tutored fellow students in classes such as Intermediate Accounting and Cost Accounting and helped with resume building. Although working full time at the moment I am sending in my applications to business schools to achieve my MBA in finance and continuing my education of accounting by studying for the CPA exam.

When I read what student mentor was about I knew I would be able to apply my past experiences to the questions others are asking and decided to sign up. I believe anything is possible with hard work and desire and I like to use that attitude to help others to become established and reach their highest goals. Many mentees aren’t sure how to get started in the field they want to work in or aren’t even sure if it’s the right field they want to be in and I’ve been in that situation before and know how valuable someone else’s experiences and advice can be.

So far I have mainly been helping mentees in the field of accounting focusing on topics like internships, job hunting, transferring schools, establishing a major, locating information about the field and discussing the wide variety of accounting jobs that are offered. I like to encourage all of my mentees to ask me as many questions as possible and to use my past experiences and knowledge to their full advantage. My experience so far has been very rewarding so far I’ve been enjoying my experience helping others through the program.

I would definitely recommend StudentMentor.org to others. The way the program is structured allows the mentor to communicate to the mentee at a time when the day is winding down and work is over so being too busy to help is never an issue. A few of my friends have already checked out the program and are interested in contributing and I hope to recruit many more!
